Network Flow Processor

Product/Technology:
NFP-32xx

Hardware, Software or Service: Hardware

Launched: May 2009 (Upgrade)

What it does? The NFP brings breakthrough performance to a broad range of demanding networking applications. Customer designs include shared service blades in switches and routers, 3G and LTE wireless infrastructure, security appliances and virtualized servers. At the heart of the NFP is a powerful array of 40 microengine RISC processors operating at 1.4GHz. Each microengine core supports eight simultaneous computing threads, enabling the NFP to deliver 56 billion instructions per second (BIPS). Additional hardware acceleration engines for PKI, bulk cryptography and deep packet inspection provide line-rate throughput. Unique to the NFP memory architecture are hardware accelerators for queues, atomic operations and CAMs. An intelligent memory management system delivers over 80% effective utilization of dual DDR3 1333MHz and dual QDR SRAM channels that operate at up to 350MHz. This unmatched processing power and memory performance is required for critical L4-L7 networking applications designed for 40-100 gigabit networks.

2010 Product Innovations - Network Products Guide

What makes it Innovative? The NFP is the first network flow processor that combines high-performance network, content and security processing into a single design. It is the only fully programmable device capable of providing 40 Gbps of line rate L2-L7 processing and deep packet inspection. The NFPs high-speed PCIe 2.0 interface offers enhanced IOV support providing the tightest coupling with Intel and x86 processors for embedded communications designs. The NFP is backed by the industry’s largest suite of development tools including an optimizing C-compiler. It is the only processor that is backwards compatible with the market-leading Intel IXP-28XX network processor.

Targeted Users: Customer designs include shared service blades in switches and routers, 3G and LTE wireless infrastructure, security appliances and virtualized servers.

Satisfied Customers: More than 30 top-tier customers using NFP processors and acceleration cards today.
